What Are Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators, more commonly known as botulinum toxin injectables, are used to smooth moderate to severe fine lines and wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance. We offer three types of FDA-approved neuromodulators at Ballert Medical Aesthetics: Botox, Dysport, and Daxxify.

These products work as muscle relaxants that use the same toxin, botulinum toxin, to temporarily paralyze the muscles and prevent muscle contractions. Muscle movements cause facial wrinkles and fine lines to develop, making this a great choice for the prevention and treatment of wrinkles.

Neuromodulator injections are often well-tolerated and found to be minimally painful, but we can apply a topical numbing cream at the start of your appointment to help you feel more comfortable. Injections only take a few minutes and require almost no downtime.

Who is a Candidate for Neuromodulators?

Most adult patients who want to improve signs of aging are candidates for neuromodulators. As long as you do not have an allergy to botulinum toxin and do not have an active skin infection, you can benefit from this treatment!

Neuromodulator Results & Recovery

After neuromodulator injections, mild redness, swelling, and tenderness around the injection site are common side effects. However, these will reduce on their own within a few days and you can apply an ice pack to minimize the swelling and discomfort. We also recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for four hours

Results will develop within 2-3 days and last an average of 3-4 months.

Ballert Medical Aesthetics is the best! Everyone there is super polite and friendly. I always feel comfortable and pleased with the services. Ashley gives amazing hydrafacials and Julianna was extremely knowledgeable and great with the injectables!

I am extremely pleased with the services that I receive here! I recently started treatment for a dynamic crease on my forehead. I was skeptical about the results I would get from the treatment, but I was assured they would be able to help improve the appearance of my forehead wrinkles. If you have been on the fence about Botox, set up an appointment for a consultation. They are extremely laid-back, easy to talk to, and they have a beautiful facility.

Received a Hydrafacial this morning, absolutely loved it! I think I look years younger! Emily was very professional and explained each step to me. I will be coming back for sure!

Botox is used to reduce unwanted expression lines, such as crows feet, forehead wrinkles, and glabellar lines. Botox can also be used to elevate the eyebrows, soften the lines around the mouth, smooth the visible muscle bands in the neck, help correct the downturn to the corner of the mouth, and can even be used to subtilty thin the face when the strong muscles used to bite become too strong. Some injectors feel that there is an increased risk of the Botox migrating to unwanted areas, although this is probably not the case.

Can you get dysport after Botox?

Yes, they work through the same mechanism and can be used together or sequentially. There is some though that the more frequently a person receives Botox or Dysport, or if you were to receive different types of neuromodulators, then you could theoretically have an increased risk of developing an immune response to the neuromodulator, and they could lose their effectiveness.

Can you reverse the effects of Dysport?

No, there is no way to reverse the effects of Dysport. The Dysport will have to run its course. If you were to have an unwanted effect of the Dysport, such as a drooping eyelid, there are certain eyedrops that can help temporarily treat the drooping eyelid. If you were to notice that there was some unwanted asymmetry, this may or may not be able to be addressed with additional injections. Let your provider know if you are having an issue, and this may be able to be addressed or corrected, but there is no reversal agent for Dysport (or for Botox, Daxxify, Juveau, or Xeomin).

Does Botox last longer than Dysport?

Botox and Dysport last about the same amount of time. Everyone is different, however, and duration can vary between each individual and the type of neuromodulator used. Also, the appropriate dosing is key in lasting results. Decreasing the dose of neuromodulator in the treatment area will cause the results to not last as long.

Does dysport cause droopy eyelids?

If the Dysport spreads out of the intended treatment area, it can result in droopy eyelids. Let your provider know if this has occurred, and options to help address the eyelid drooping may be available. Luckily, the duration of drooping of the eyelid, if it were to occur, do not typically last 3-4 months.

How long after Dysport can I wash my face?

You can wash your face with clean, soapy water immediately after your treatment.

How long does Dysport last in forehead?

If dosed appropriately, Dysport generally lasts 3-4 months in the forehead.

How long does it take for Dysport to kick in?

For most people, Dysport starts working in 1 week, and reaches is maximal effect at 2 weeks. Occasionally, people will notice results more quickly - within a few days.

How many units of Dysport is equal to Botox?

Comparing Botox units to Dysport Units can be confusing. Generally speaking, it takes 2.5-3 times the number of units of Dysport to treat the same area you would treat with Botox. This does not mean one is superior to the other, they are just different formulations. In studies for FDA, the dose of Botox for 50% of patients to have continued treatment response at 3 months, 20 Units of Botox were injected into the glabella. With Dysport, this number was 50U.

How much is a syringe of Dysport?

Dysport is sold by the unit, not by the syringe. Your provider will evaluate your areas of concern, the strength of the muscle in the area, and come up with a recommendation on how many units they would recommend. So, the final cost of Dysport is variable based on your concerns and what we feel we can achieve.

How often should I get Dysport?

How often you get Dysport varies on what you are trying to achieve. Since the effects of Dysport last 3-4 months in most people, we have many clients that get treated every 3-4 months. Others tend to get Dysport less frequently, 1-2 times per year. Some clints reserve their treatments for special occasions such as reunions or weddings.

How quickly does Dysport work?

For most people, Dysport starts working in 1 week, and reaches is maximal effect at 2 weeks. Occasionally, people will notice results more quickly - within a few days.

Is dysport a filler?

No, Dysport is a neuromodulator and not a filler. Dysport works by decreasing muscle contractions, and the unwanted facial expressions/wrinkles associated with those contractions. Dysport will not add volume to the area treated.

Is Dysport safe?

Like any procedure involving injections and medications, there are risks. Bruising, bleeding, discomfort, headaches, swelling, dry eyes, dry mouth, eyelid or eyebrow drooping, allergic reactions, are among the risks of Dysport injections.

What is Dysport for lips?

Dysport can be used in the lips to decrease the fine lines around the mouth, especially the lines that appear when pursing the lips. Dysport can also be used to weaken the muscles that retract the lips and make the lips look smaller when smiling, creating a subtle lip fullness.

What is Dysport used for?

Dysport, like other available neuromodulators such as Botox, Daxxify, Juveau, and Xeomin, are used cosmetically to treat muscle contractions that lead to unwanted lines and expressions. Dysport can also be used in people suffering from limb spasticity, migraines, excessive sweating, and facial ticks.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are different medication formulations that both weaken the ability of a nerve to stimulate muscle contractions. The active part of the medication is the same in each, but the rest of the molecule is different. You could make the analogy of 2 different house keys that work the same lock. Each house key has the same piece that activates the tumblers in the lock, but the handles are different.

What should I avoid after Dysport?

We ask you to avoid strenuous exercise or laying down for 4 hours after your treatment. This is to reduce the risk of additional bleeding and bruising, and to possibly decrease the risk that the Dysport moves outside of the intended treatment area, causing unwanted effects.

Why is dysport cheaper than Botox?

There is some confusion whether or not Dysport is cheaper than Botox because the units injected are not the same between the two products. To get the same effect, many injectors use 2.5-3 times as many units of Dysport as they would with Botox. This does not mean that one is superior to the other, they are just different in how they are dosed, and this can lead to confusion about the price. In our practice, you will generally pay about the same price to treat each area with either Dysport or Botox. Some people respond to one product better than the other, and vice versa.
