What Should I Avoid Following My Dermal Fillers Treatment?

Blog Home

People who receive dermal filler treatments to reclaim the appearance of youth and vitality, especially to make their face look smoother with fewer fine lines and wrinkles and their lips full and plump, often don’t realize that this type of procedure requires just as much aftercare as some types of surgical treatments. Nonsurgical cosmetic procedures still impact the physical state of your body. You must give your face and other areas that received treatment the time needed to heal. Precautions can also reduce the risk of infection. We’ve created this guide as an outline of the main things every patient needs to avoid during their dermal filler aftercare for the best possible outcome.

Avoiding Alcohol and Heat

Normally, there is absolutely nothing wrong with moderate exposure to alcohol or excessive heat and exercise. However, after a dermal filler treatment, these types of exposures can cause harm. Alcohol can increase bruising and inflammation during the first 24 hours post-treatment. Excessive heat and exercise may result in prolonged swelling. Be sure to follow your provider’s instructions regarding alcohol and heat exposure after treatment.

Daily Habits

While there is no downtime after dermal filler treatments, there are some daily habits or activities that may need to be temporarily postponed. Any activities that increase blood flow or apply pressure to the treatment area can cause the filler material to move into unwanted areas.  Additionally, some types of skincare products, such as AHA, oil-based, and retinol formulas, can break down filler materials.

Promoting Skin Health

Lastly, your improved health requires plenty of sleep and additional skin care. Yet, if you don’t avoid certain activities related to both, you risk breaking down or spreading the fillers. Although some doctors recommend not sleeping against treated areas for the first four hours after treatment, the best results occur by waiting 3-4 days. The same is true of skin treatments that might apply pressure or cause swelling, especially massages, peels, waxing, and various sauna and spa services. You should wait at least two weeks to return to these and other pressure- or heat-related skin care routines.
